Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola faces a major selection challenge ahead of Sunday’s Premier League meeting with Manchester City after confirming that forwards Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo will miss the match through injury.
The two attackers picked up problems while representing their countries during the international break. Isak sustained a thigh injury while playing for Sweden, while Gakpo suffered an ankle injury during the Netherlands’ match against Serbia.
Speaking ahead of the game, Iraola confirmed that neither player was ready to return. However, he indicated that the injuries were not expected to keep them out for an extended period, with Liverpool monitoring their recovery on a daily basis.
Isak’s absence is a significant setback for Liverpool after he scored four goals in his opening five Premier League appearances. Gakpo has also contributed to the attack, recording two goals and four assists in six matches this season, according to reports.
With both forwards unavailable, Iraola must decide how to organise his attack against a Manchester City side that has made a strong start to the campaign. Hugo Ekitike is also recovering from a long-term Achilles injury, further limiting Liverpool’s recognised centre-forward options.
Young Welsh forward Lewis Koumas could be given an opportunity to lead the line. The 21-year-old has made a handful of senior appearances but has yet to start a Premier League match. Iraola expressed confidence in the youngster, saying he had already shown that he could contribute during important moments.
The Liverpool manager also has alternative options, including deploying wide players in central attacking roles. Federico Chiesa could potentially return to contention after recovering from injury, although his match fitness remains a consideration.
Iraola acknowledged that the team had limited time to prepare a replacement plan, particularly because several players only returned from international duty shortly before the match. He added that the demanding schedule would require Liverpool to adapt quickly as domestic and European fixtures continue.
Liverpool will host Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday, October 11. The clash presents an important test for Iraola’s side, who must find an effective attacking solution despite losing two forwards to international-break injuries.
For now, Liverpool’s immediate priority is to manage the absences without rushing either player back prematurely. Their recovery will be assessed day by day as the club looks ahead to a busy run of fixtures.
