Harry Kane breaks England appearance record but can he take the final step to complete his career?

Harry Kane has reached another major milestone in his remarkable England career, equalling Peter Shilton’s record of 125 appearances for the Three Lions while continuing to strengthen his claim as one of the country’s greatest-ever players.

The England captain marked the occasion in style on Tuesday, scoring twice and contributing to all three goals as England defeated Czechia 3-0 at Wembley in the Nations League. The victory extended England’s strong run in the competition.

Kane’s two goals took his international tally to 91, further extending his position as England’s all-time leading scorer. He has now combined his record number of goals with the joint-highest appearance total in the history of the men’s senior team.

Harry Kane breaks England appearance record but can he take the final step to complete his career?

The 33-year-old reached 125 caps in just over 11 years since making his England debut in 2015. His latest achievement also means he has matched a record that had stood since Shilton finished his international career in 1990.

Kane will have the opportunity to move outright clear of Shilton when England next face Croatia on November 12. That would give him the men's appearance record outright, adding another significant achievement to a career already filled with individual milestones.

Yet the biggest question surrounding Kane’s England career is no longer about records. Despite his extraordinary scoring numbers and his role as captain, the major international trophy has so far remained out of reach.

England came close at Euro 2020, reaching the final before losing to Italy on penalties. The team also reached the Euro 2024 final but were beaten by Spain. Kane was again part of the squad that reached the 2026 World Cup semi-finals before England were eliminated by Argentina.

The striker's individual record, however, remains exceptional. He has consistently delivered goals for England and has continued to perform at the highest level under Thomas Tuchel. Tuchel has also praised the squad’s progress since the World Cup, with England responding strongly in the Nations League after losing their opening game to Spain.

For Kane, the next stage of his international career is therefore about more than adding another appearance or another goal. The opportunity to lead England to a major trophy could ultimately determine how his remarkable career is remembered.

At 33, Kane still has an important role to play for England. With his latest record already secured and another appearance milestone within reach, the remaining challenge is perhaps the one that matters most — helping England finally turn individual success into international silverware.
