Florian Wirtz has revealed that private conversations with Germany head coach Jürgen Klopp helped him rediscover his confidence after the Liverpool midfielder produced an impressive performance in Germany’s 2-0 victory over Serbia.
Wirtz scored Germany’s second goal in Munich on Thursday, completing a strong individual display as Klopp secured his first victory since taking charge of the national team.
The 23-year-old admitted that he had several conversations with Klopp during the international break and said the discussions had a positive effect on his mindset.
Wirtz explained that Klopp encouraged him to play the type of football that has made him successful. He said he was pleased that the new Germany boss spoke to him and made clear what he expected from him.
The relationship is particularly interesting because Wirtz joined Liverpool in 2025, a year after Klopp ended his long spell as the club’s manager. The pair had not previously worked together at Liverpool and only made direct contact shortly before Klopp began his Germany tenure.
Wirtz’s performance against Serbia provided an encouraging moment after a difficult start to his season at club level. He was involved in Germany’s opening goal before adding the second himself with a composed finish.
Klopp has also praised Wirtz’s contribution, while the midfielder has spoken positively about the manager’s approach to the national team. Wirtz said Klopp has been particularly effective at making players feel valued and giving them confidence.
The Germany coach has emphasised building a strong connection with his players, and Wirtz’s comments suggest that his approach is already having an impact within the squad.
Germany will now look to build on the Serbia victory as Klopp continues his early work with the national team. For Wirtz, the performance offers an opportunity to carry his renewed confidence back to Liverpool after the international break.
