Momentum Shifts in Myanmar's Civil War
After years of steady gains by resistance forces, Myanmar's military junta is regaining ground in several parts of the country, aided by a controversial conscription program that has significantly increased troop numbers. Military offensives have intensified in border regions including Kachin, Chin, and Karen states, where resistance groups had previously made substantial territorial gains.
The shift marks a notable change in a conflict that began after the military seized power in a 2021 coup, triggering widespread resistance from pro-democracy groups and ethnic armed organizations.
Conscription Strengthens the Junta
A key factor behind the military's recent advances is the implementation of mandatory military service, introduced in 2024. Resistance commanders say the policy has provided the junta with a steady stream of recruits, helping replenish losses and sustain large-scale operations.
Several young men interviewed by international media claimed they were forcibly recruited and deployed to frontline positions after being detained and sent through military training programs.
Military analysts note that increased manpower, combined with air power, drones, and improved battlefield coordination, has enabled government forces to launch counteroffensives in areas previously controlled by rebel groups.
Rebels Face Growing Challenges
Resistance groups report growing difficulties in maintaining their campaigns due to shortages of fighters, weapons, ammunition, and funding. Some commanders say that while public support remains strong, sustaining prolonged military operations has become increasingly difficult.
In addition to battlefield pressures, divisions among certain resistance factions have complicated efforts to maintain a unified front against the military government.
Conflict Remains Far From Over
Despite recent military gains, the conflict remains highly fluid. Resistance forces continue to control or influence significant territory across Myanmar, and fighting persists in multiple regions. Analysts caution that neither side appears close to achieving a decisive victory.
The military has recaptured some strategic locations in recent months, including parts of Chin State, demonstrating its ability to regain territory when supported by air power and reinforced troop deployments.
Humanitarian Concerns Continue
The prolonged conflict has had devastating consequences for civilians. Millions have been displaced, while thousands have lost their lives since the coup. Human rights groups and international organizations continue to call for efforts to protect civilians and pursue a peaceful resolution to the crisis.
As Myanmar's civil war enters another critical phase, the military's recent gains suggest the conflict may be entering a new and potentially prolonged chapter, with both sides preparing for continued fighting rather than a negotiated settlement.
