The chairman of a local government area in Zamfara State has reportedly been abducted by armed bandits after an attack on his convoy that left four security personnel dead, according to local authorities and security sources.

The incident occurred when heavily armed gunmen ambushed the convoy while it was travelling through a vulnerable area of the state. Witnesses said the attackers opened fire, leading to a fierce exchange before overpowering the security detail and abducting the local government chairman.

Security officials confirmed that four members of the chairman's security team were killed during the attack. Several others reportedly sustained injuries and were taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment.

Following the incident, security agencies launched a search-and-rescue operation aimed at locating the abducted official and apprehending those responsible for the attack. Troops and other security personnel have reportedly been deployed to the affected area, while surveillance and intelligence-gathering efforts have been intensified.

Authorities have urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information that could assist in the rescue operation. They also warned against circulating unverified reports that could hamper ongoing efforts.

Zamfara State has remained one of the regions most affected by armed banditry in northwestern Nigeria. Criminal groups operating in the area have been linked to kidnappings for ransom, attacks on communities, cattle rustling and assaults on security personnel.

The latest attack underscores the persistent security challenges facing the region despite ongoing military operations and government initiatives aimed at restoring peace and protecting rural communities.

Local leaders and residents have expressed concern over the continued violence, calling for strengthened security measures and enhanced intelligence operations to curb the activities of armed groups.

As of the time of reporting, no group had claimed responsibility for the abduction, and authorities had not disclosed whether any contact had been made with the kidnappers.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing, while security agencies continue efforts to secure the release of the abducted chairman and bring the perpetrators to justice. Officials have pledged to provide further updates as the rescue operation progresses.
