At least 14 people have been killed and several others injured following a deadly attack on a community in Benue State, according to local officials, in the latest incident of violence to hit Nigeria's troubled north-central region.

The attack occurred on Tuesday, with armed assailants reportedly storming the village and opening fire on residents. Local authorities said the death toll could rise as search and rescue efforts continue and security personnel assess the full extent of the destruction.

Officials Confirm Casualties

A local government official confirmed that at least 14 villagers lost their lives in the attack, while several others sustained injuries. Some residents reportedly fled into nearby bushes to escape the violence, and emergency responders have begun assisting survivors.

Security agencies have been deployed to the affected area, although officials have not yet announced any arrests or identified those responsible for the assault.

Part of a Wider Pattern of Violence

Benue State, located in Nigeria's Middle Belt, has experienced recurring attacks linked to longstanding disputes over land, grazing routes and access to natural resources. The region has witnessed repeated clashes between farming communities and armed groups, contributing to persistent insecurity and displacement.

Humanitarian organisations have warned that continued violence has forced thousands of people from their homes, disrupted farming activities and increased food security concerns in affected communities.

Calls for Stronger Security Measures

Community leaders have renewed calls for enhanced security across vulnerable rural areas, urging the Federal Government and security agencies to strengthen intelligence gathering and improve protection for residents.

The latest attack follows a series of deadly incidents reported in Benue in recent months, highlighting ongoing challenges in restoring lasting peace to the state.

Investigation Underway

Authorities said investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack and identify those responsible.

Residents have also appealed for humanitarian assistance for displaced families and survivors who lost homes and property during the assault.

As security operations continue, officials have urged citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, while reiterating the government's commitment to improving safety in communities affected by recurring violence.
