Australia is banning songs created entirely or largely by artificial intelligence from its official music charts, in a major move to protect human creativity in the music industry.
The Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) says the new rules will take effect from Friday. Music that is substantially human-made can still qualify, meaning artists can use AI as a supporting creative tool.
The decision follows controversy surrounding an AI-assisted cover of Madonna’s “Like a Prayer”, which became one of Australia’s most-played songs and climbed high on the ARIA charts.
ARIA says the new rules are designed to ensure the charts continue to recognise human artistry and prevent fully AI-generated music from competing directly with music created by people.
The move marks a major step in Australia’s growing effort to balance AI innovation with the protection of artists, creativity and copyright.
