Washington is demanding stronger restrictions on Iran’s nuclear activities and is preparing tougher sanctions targeting Tehran and countries that continue doing business with it.

Iran, meanwhile, wants sanctions relief and has rejected US pressure. Tehran has also threatened to restrict oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global energy supplies.

The dispute over Hormuz has already disrupted shipping and increased concerns about global oil prices, while efforts by mediators to revive negotiations have so far failed to produce a lasting agreement.

With both sides refusing to give ground on the key issues, the possibility of a wider economic and security crisis remains a major concern
