The breakthrough relies on a quantum effect known as superabsorption, in which light and molecules interact in a way that allows energy to be absorbed collectively. Researchers say this could eventually lead to new approaches to energy storage and fast-charging technology.

However, the technology remains at an early experimental stage. The current prototype stores only a tiny amount of energy and holds it for nanoseconds, meaning it is nowhere near ready to power smartphones or electric vehicles.

Researchers believe the technology could nevertheless open new possibilities in quantum computing and other advanced applications, potentially changing how energy is stored and delivered in the future.
