The Sokoto State Police Command has warned political parties, candidates and their supporters against violence, intimidation and other unlawful activities ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
The warning comes as political activities and preparations for the elections continue to increase across the country, with security agencies urging political actors to conduct their campaigns peacefully and within the law.
Police authorities have stressed the need for political parties to discourage their supporters from engaging in acts capable of disrupting public order or threatening the safety of other participants in the electoral process.
The police warning is part of wider efforts by security agencies to prevent electoral violence and ensure that political activities do not threaten the peace and stability of communities.
Nationally, the Nigeria Police Force and the Independent National Electoral Commission have also warned politicians against inflammatory statements and conduct capable of inciting violence ahead of the 2027 elections.
Under Nigeria's Electoral Act, parties and candidates are prohibited from threatening or using violence to influence voters or disrupt the electoral process. Offenders can face legal sanctions, including fines and imprisonment depending on the offence.
The police have therefore urged political leaders in Sokoto to put the interests of residents above political differences and ensure that campaigns remain peaceful, lawful and respectful.
As the 2027 elections approach, security agencies are expected to maintain closer monitoring of political activities while taking action against individuals found violating electoral and public-order laws.
