Burnham: Britain Must Act Against Injustice Over West Bank Settlements

Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday, Burnham said supporting a two-state solution requires more than political statements and argued that Britain must take practical steps when people are being forced from their homes or intimidated.

The comments followed the UK government’s decision to ban imports from Israeli settlements and introduce targeted measures against settlements and those involved in supporting or profiting from them. Britain announced the measures alongside France and Canada, citing concerns over settlement expansion and its impact on prospects for a future Palestinian state.

Burnham said the government’s actions were intended to support the long-standing goal of a two-state solution, under which Israel and a future Palestinian state would coexist in peace and security.

“We have to stand for something,” Burnham said, arguing that Britain should show leadership on the international stage and respond to what his government considers injustice in the region.

The policy has triggered a strong reaction from Israel. Israeli authorities have announced measures against Britain, including plans to close the British consulate in East Jerusalem and restrictions on the entry of several British officials and politicians.

The British government has maintained that its measures are directed at settlement policies and those facilitating them, rather than at Israeli citizens or Jewish people. It has also reiterated its support for Israel’s security and for a peaceful two-state solution.

The dispute represents a significant shift in Britain’s approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and is likely to further test relations between London and Jerusalem as international pressure over West Bank settlement expansion continues.
