The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi, formerly the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, has suspended its four-week-old industrial action.
The union began the “No Pay, No Work” strike on August 12, 2026, over demands for the full payment of members’ Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance and Professorial Allowance.

The suspension is expected to pave the way for academic staff to return to their duties and for normal academic activities to resume at the university.
The dispute had disrupted academic activities at the institution, with the union maintaining that outstanding payments needed to be addressed before lecturers could fully return to work.
The development comes amid wider concerns within Nigeria’s university system over staff welfare, salaries and the implementation of agreements between university authorities and academic unions.
ASUU has continued to press for improved working conditions and the payment of outstanding entitlements, while universities and government authorities have faced pressure to resolve disputes without prolonged disruptions to students’ academic programmes.
The latest suspension provides an opportunity for the university management and the union to continue discussions on the outstanding issues and work toward a lasting resolution.
