Putin Envoy, US Officials Discuss Ukraine War and Energy Cooperation

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s special envoy, Kirill Dmitriev, has held discussions with US officials on efforts to end the war in Ukraine and explore potential energy cooperation between Washington and Moscow, according to a US official.

Dmitriev, who also heads the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), travelled to Washington for the meeting, which the US official described as constructive. The discussions focused on diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict and possible economic partnerships after the war.

The meeting comes amid renewed diplomatic activity by the administration of US President Donald Trump, which has been exploring ways to reduce hostilities and revive negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.

Putin Envoy, US Officials Discuss Ukraine War and Energy Cooperation

Earlier in September, Trump’s envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, met with Putin in Moscow as part of efforts to advance discussions on ending the conflict.

Trump also met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in New York during the United Nations General Assembly, where they discussed a possible ceasefire targeting energy infrastructure.

The proposed arrangement is intended to reduce attacks on critical energy facilities. Zelensky has expressed Ukraine’s willingness to consider the proposal, although questions remain about Russia’s position and the prospects for a broader agreement.

Beyond the war, the discussions involving Dmitriev and US officials also addressed potential cooperation in the energy sector, particularly opportunities that could emerge if relations between the two countries improve.

However, no comprehensive peace agreement or confirmed energy deal was announced following the meeting. Diplomatic engagement continues as Washington seeks to explore possible steps towards ending the war, while major disagreements between Moscow and Kyiv remain unresolved.
