Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso says the club needed an “update” rather than a complete reset when he took charge at Stamford Bridge this summer.
Alonso was appointed on a four-year contract in May and officially began his role in July, succeeding Liam Rosenior. He inherited a Chelsea side that had finished 10th in the Premier League during a difficult 2025/26 campaign.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Alonso explained that his priority was to assess the existing squad, including the players’ stages of development, before deciding which areas required changes.
“Not a reset - it was an update, I would say,” Alonso said.
The Spaniard said some decisions had already been made during the summer, while other changes would be considered as his work with the team continues. He stressed that the focus has now shifted from preparation to improving through competitive matches.
Alonso also said he is not looking for perfection from his players at this stage. Instead, he wants Chelsea to develop greater consistency, defensive solidity and confidence in their approach against different opponents.
Chelsea have experienced a busy period of change since Alonso's arrival. The club made several squad decisions during the summer, including the departure of midfielder Enzo Fernandez to Manchester City for a reported £125 million.
The manager has also acknowledged that developing a new playing identity will take time. After Chelsea's draw with Hull City earlier this month, Alonso said the team needed to learn from both its mistakes and positive moments as the process continued.
Chelsea now face another test against Brentford in a west London derby on Friday. The match gives Alonso another opportunity to assess his squad and continue implementing the changes he believes are necessary.
For Alonso, the task is therefore not simply to rebuild Chelsea from scratch, but to develop the existing group while making targeted changes that fit his approach and long-term plans.
