AAU lecturer slumps and dies in hotel as police arrest three

A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State, Dr Matthew Uwuigbe, has died in a hotel room, with the state police command investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.

Uwuigbe, who was a lecturer in the university’s Faculty of Medical Laboratory Science, reportedly died on October 5, 2026, at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area.

According to the Edo State Police Command, the lecturer had checked into the hotel with a 21-year-old woman. Police spokesperson ASP Eno Ikoedem said Uwuigbe later asked the woman to leave the room to purchase water.

The woman reportedly returned to the room and found the lecturer unresponsive, prompting her to raise an alarm and report the incident to the authorities.

Police said three people — the hotel owner, the manager and the woman who was reportedly with Uwuigbe — have been arrested as investigators work to establish what happened before his death.

The police have not announced a cause of death, and there has been no official conclusion that foul play was involved. Uwuigbe’s remains have been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary pending further investigation.

AAU confirmed that Uwuigbe was a member of its academic staff but said the incident occurred outside the university and was unrelated to the institution’s official activities.

The university’s spokesperson, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, also clarified that the woman involved was not a student of the institution, describing the circumstances surrounding the incident as a private matter.

The police investigation is expected to establish the events leading to the lecturer’s death and determine whether any offence was committed. Authorities have not yet released further details on the outcome of the investigation.
