Southampton boss Tonda Eckert keeps job after suspended ban and £28,000 fine

Southampton manager Tonda Eckert has been handed a six-week suspended ban and a £28,000 fine by the Football Association (FA) over his involvement in the club’s “Spygate” controversy. The punishment means he can remain in charge of the Championship side unless the suspension is activated by a further breach of the rules.

The FA announced the decision on Wednesday, October 7, after an independent regulatory commission considered three misconduct charges relating to the observation of training sessions belonging to Oxford United, Ipswich Town and Middlesbrough between December 2025 and May 2026. Eckert admitted the charges.

The commission suspended the six-week ban until the end of the 2027–28 season. It will take effect if Eckert is found to have breached football rules again by requesting, authorising, carrying out or using information obtained through the observation of another club’s training sessions. He was also issued a reprimand.

The case follows a separate disciplinary decision against Southampton earlier this year. The club was expelled from the Championship play-offs after admitting breaches involving the unauthorised observation of opponents’ training sessions. Southampton were also given a four-point deduction for the 2026–27 season.

The controversy intensified after a member of Southampton’s staff was found to have observed Middlesbrough’s preparations before their play-off semi-final. Further incidents involving Oxford United and Ipswich Town were subsequently examined as part of the disciplinary proceedings.

Southampton welcomed the FA’s decision, describing the episode as a regrettable period in the club’s history. The club said measures had been introduced to reduce the risk of similar errors in judgement occurring again.

Eckert had previously accepted responsibility for the incident and apologised to Southampton’s players, staff and supporters. The commission’s decision allows him to continue working while the suspended sanction remains in place.

The FA had sought a longer suspension, according to reporting by Sky Sports and The Guardian. The commission ultimately imposed the six-week suspended ban, fine and reprimand.

Southampton are now seeking to move forward from the controversy as they continue their Championship campaign. Eckert’s immediate position is unchanged, but any further breach covered by the ruling could trigger the suspended ban.
