Nigerian Ports Authority Reports 67% Rise in Vehicle Handling in Q1 2026

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has announced a major increase in the number of vehicles handled at Nigerian ports during the first quarter of 2026.

According to the agency, a total of 58,870 vehicles were processed between January and March 2026, compared to 35,262 units recorded during the same period in 2025. This represents a 67 percent increase in vehicle handling activities across the country’s ports.

The development reflects growing activity within Nigeria’s maritime and automotive sectors as import and logistics operations continue to expand.

Increased Port Activity Signals Economic Movement

Industry observers say the rise in vehicle handling may indicate increased commercial activity, stronger consumer demand, and improved operations within the port system.

The Nigerian Ports Authority explained that efficient cargo management and ongoing operational improvements have contributed to smoother handling processes in recent months.

Analysts also noted that the increase could positively impact related sectors such as transportation, logistics, automobile sales, and port services.

Importance of the Maritime Sector

Nigeria’s port industry plays a major role in supporting trade, importation, and economic activity across the country.

Stakeholders believe that improvements in port operations and infrastructure can help strengthen supply chains, reduce delays, and encourage more business activity within the maritime sector.

The NPA has continued to emphasize the importance of modernizing port facilities and improving efficiency to support national economic growth.

Industry Experts Call for Continued Reforms

Maritime experts say sustained investment in infrastructure, technology, and security will be important in maintaining growth within the sector.

They also encouraged stronger collaboration between government agencies, shipping operators, and private stakeholders to further improve efficiency at Nigerian ports.

The increase in vehicle handling during the first quarter of 2026 is being viewed by many industry observers as a positive sign for Nigeria’s trade and logistics environment.
