Questions Grow Over Ronaldo’s Long-Term Future
Cristiano Ronaldo has once again found himself at the center of football discussions after fresh comments emerged regarding the possibility of him playing at the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
While Portugal manager Roberto Martínez recently suggested that nobody should rule out Ronaldo appearing at the tournament, the president of the Portuguese Football Federation, Pedro Proença, has taken a more cautious view. He stated that it would require a “huge surprise” for Ronaldo to still be playing international football at the age of 45 when Portugal co-hosts the 2030 World Cup.
Future Role Already Being Discussed
Despite doubts about Ronaldo remaining an active player by 2030, Portuguese football officials have made it clear that the five-time Ballon d'Or winner will continue to have a significant role within the national team setup after retirement. Proença indicated that Ronaldo’s influence on Portuguese football extends far beyond his playing career and that opportunities within the federation would always be available to him.
Officials also highlighted Ronaldo’s status as one of the most influential figures in the history of Portuguese football and a global ambassador for the sport.
Martinez Still Believes
Portugal coach Roberto Martínez remains optimistic about Ronaldo’s longevity, pointing to the forward’s exceptional fitness, dedication, and mentality.
Martínez said Ronaldo’s commitment to physical preparation and his relentless desire to compete are unlike those of most players, which is why he believes the possibility should not be dismissed entirely.
Ronaldo’s Legacy Already Secure
Regardless of whether he appears at the 2030 World Cup, Ronaldo’s place in football history is already firmly established. The Portuguese captain remains his country's all-time leading appearance-maker and goalscorer and is widely regarded as one of the greatest players ever to play the game.
For now, football fans will continue debating whether Ronaldo can defy age once again, but Portuguese officials believe his future impact on the national team may ultimately come off the pitch rather than on it.
