Massive Overnight Missile and Drone Assault Hits Ukrainian Capital
At least 13 people have been killed after Russia launched one of its largest combined missile and drone attacks on Kyiv since the start of the war, according to Ukrainian authorities.
The overnight assault involved dozens of missiles and hundreds of drones, causing widespread damage to residential buildings, public infrastructure and commercial properties across several districts of the Ukrainian capital. Emergency services said scores of people were also injured, while search and rescue operations continued at multiple strike sites.
Officials said several apartment buildings were heavily damaged, with fires breaking out in residential neighborhoods and other parts of the city. Rescue teams worked through the night to search for survivors trapped beneath collapsed structures.
Kyiv's mayor announced a day of mourning as authorities assessed the full extent of the destruction and warned that the death toll could rise as recovery efforts continue.
Following the attack, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged international partners to strengthen Ukraine's air defense capabilities, saying additional systems are needed to protect civilians from continued missile and drone strikes.
The latest bombardment comes amid heightened fighting and renewed long-range attacks by both Russia and Ukraine, further complicating diplomatic efforts to end the conflict.
The large-scale strike has drawn renewed international concern over the humanitarian impact of the ongoing war. Governments and international organizations have continued to call for the protection of civilians and a reduction in hostilities as the conflict enters another challenging phase.
Rescue operations remain ongoing, and officials are expected to provide further updates as more information becomes available.
