Switzerland booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-finals after defeating Colombia 4-3 in a penalty shootout following a goalless Round of 16 contest.

The tightly contested match remained scoreless after 120 minutes, with both teams creating limited clear-cut opportunities before the outcome was decided from the penalty spot.

Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel made a crucial save during the shootout, while Rubén Vargas converted the decisive penalty to send Switzerland into the last eight.

Colombia exited the tournament after an impressive campaign, falling just short in one of the most closely fought knockout matches of the competition.

The victory sends Switzerland into their first World Cup quarter-final since the 1954 tournament, ending a wait of more than seven decades for a place among the final eight teams.

Switzerland will now face defending champions Argentina in the quarter-finals as they continue their bid for a historic World Cup run.

With Switzerland advancing, the race for the FIFA World Cup trophy intensifies as the remaining teams prepare for the quarter-final stage.

Football fans can now look forward to another round of high-stakes knockout matches as the tournament moves closer to its conclusion.
