Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has urged the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to release any legally disclosable records relating to President Bola Tinubu, saying Nigerians have a right to information about the country’s leaders.

Atiku, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate for the 2027 election, made the call after the FBI reportedly told a US court that releasing some records could endanger the lives or safety of individuals.
He argued that the FBI could protect sensitive information, confidential sources and ongoing investigations while releasing records that can legally be made public.
Atiku said his request was not an attempt to interfere in Nigeria’s politics, but a call for transparency and democratic accountability ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The controversy comes as political attention grows around records concerning Tinubu in the United States. The FBI is currently seeking permission to explain privately to a US court why some information should remain withheld.
Atiku maintains that if the records can legally be released without compromising legitimate law-enforcement interests, they should be made available to the Nigerian public.
