Amaechi Suffers Setback as Major Ally Resigns and Returns to APC

Former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi has suffered a political setback in Rivers State following the decision of Dr Sokonte Davies, a former ally and governorship aspirant, to leave the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and return to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Davies announced his decision on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, in a statement explaining his reasons for rejoining the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections. He said the move followed consultations with his family, political associates, constituents and community elders.

The former governorship aspirant said he had assessed the political platform through which he could best serve his constituents and contribute to the development of Rivers State. He described his return to the APC as a homecoming, noting that he was among the party’s founding members.

Davies also expressed his commitment to supporting President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027. He said he believed the APC offered a suitable platform for what he described as progressive governance, national unity and grassroots development.

The politician thanked the ADC leadership and members for the opportunity to serve during his time with the opposition party. He said his decision was not driven by personal bitterness and urged supporters to remain calm and law-abiding.

Davies also acknowledged FCT Minister Nyesom Wike for what he described as a warm reception and thanked APC National Vice Chairman Victor Giadom for facilitating his return to the party.

His departure represents a change in the political alignments surrounding Amaechi, a former Rivers State governor who has become associated with opposition politics following his exit from the APC. However, the broader electoral impact of Davies’ decision remains unclear, and there is no published evidence establishing how many supporters may follow him.

The development comes as politicians and political parties begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 elections. Party defections and alliances are expected to remain important features of the political landscape, particularly in Rivers State, where competing interests continue to shape preparations for the next electoral cycle.

Davies urged people who share his political vision to consider joining the APC, while expressing hope that his decision would help advance his stated goals for Rivers State and the country.
