Paris Saint-Germain forward Ferran Torres has withdrawn from the Spain squad after suffering persistent discomfort in his left ankle, dealing a setback to the player following an impressive start to his career at the French club.
The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed on Friday that Torres would leave the national-team camp after the ankle problem continued to cause symptoms. The federation said the decision was taken to prioritise his recovery.
Torres initially remained available despite the problem and was able to train and play during the international break. He started Spain's 3-2 victory over England but was substituted in the 55th minute. He was then an unused substitute in the team's 4-1 win over Croatia.
The RFEF said its medical staff had been in regular contact with PSG's medical team since the beginning of the international camp, with both sides monitoring the forward's condition before the decision was made to release him.
Torres has enjoyed a strong beginning to his PSG career since joining the French champions from Barcelona during the summer. He scored twice on his debut against Rennes before adding further goals against Brest and Marseille.
His most notable performance came in the Champions League, when he scored a hat-trick against Slovan Bratislava in PSG's opening league-phase match. The forward has quickly become an important attacking option for the European champions.
The injury also means Torres will miss Spain's remaining Nations League fixtures during the current international window. Spain are scheduled to face the Czech Republic in Oviedo before travelling to Split to meet Croatia.
Spain coach Luis de la Fuente has called up Real Madrid forward Carlos Espí to replace Torres. The 21-year-old has been promoted from the Under-21 squad after scoring five goals in Spain's 13-0 victory over San Marino.
For PSG, the priority will now be ensuring Torres makes a full recovery before returning to club action. The timing comes as the forward had begun to make a strong impression following his summer move to Paris.
The extent of Torres' absence beyond the current international break has not been specified by the Spanish federation. Further assessment by PSG's medical staff will determine when he can return to training and competitive action.
