The Federal Government has announced plans to replace the traditional khaki uniform worn by members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) with Adire attire as part of efforts to promote Nigeria's cultural heritage and support the local textile industry.

According to government officials, the proposal is designed to showcase indigenous fabrics while creating new opportunities for local producers and artisans involved in Adire production.

Authorities said adopting Adire for NYSC uniforms could stimulate demand for locally made textiles, encourage investment in the fashion and creative industries, and generate employment across the value chain.

The initiative also aligns with broader efforts to increase the use of made-in-Nigeria products and strengthen domestic manufacturing.

Government officials indicated that consultations with relevant stakeholders, including the NYSC management, textile manufacturers, and fashion industry representatives, will be carried out before any final decision is implemented.

Further details, including the proposed design, rollout timeline, and implementation process, are expected to be announced after the consultations.

If approved, the proposal would mark one of the most significant changes to the NYSC uniform since the scheme was established in 1973.

For now, the existing khaki uniform remains in use, while discussions on the proposed transition continue.
