International Rescue Teams Complete Remarkable Operation
A 43-year-old security guard has been rescued alive after spending eight days trapped beneath the rubble of a collapsed building following the devastating earthquakes that struck Venezuela.
The survivor, identified as Hernán Alberto Gil Flores, was pulled from the basement of a shopping centre in La Guaira after an intensive multinational rescue effort. Emergency responders said he survived in a small air pocket created by the collapsed structure, allowing him to remain alive while crews worked to reach him.
Rescue teams from Venezuela and several other countries carefully tunneled through unstable debris, using specialized equipment to maintain contact with Gil Flores and provide him with food, water and medical support during the operation.
The rescue was complicated by damaged buildings, aftershocks and the risk of further collapses, requiring crews to proceed with extreme caution.
Gil Flores' rescue has become a symbol of hope following the twin earthquakes, which caused widespread destruction in northern Venezuela and claimed thousands of lives. Search and rescue operations continue as emergency workers look for additional survivors and assist affected communities.
