Former Presidential Candidate Seeks Greater Transparency
Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has called for greater accountability following reports referencing an International Monetary Fund (IMF) assessment that cited ₦8.83 trillion in off-budget spending.
Obi urged the Federal Government to provide clear explanations regarding the reported expenditure, emphasizing the importance of transparency, fiscal responsibility and prudent management of public resources.
According to Obi, Nigerians deserve detailed information on how public funds are allocated and spent, particularly when significant expenditures are reported outside the approved budget framework.
He stressed that openness in public finance is essential for strengthening trust in government institutions and promoting good governance.
The former Anambra State governor said transparent budgeting and effective oversight are critical to ensuring that public resources are used efficiently and in line with national development priorities.
He also encouraged relevant oversight institutions to continue monitoring public spending and ensuring compliance with established financial regulations.
As of the time of reporting, the Federal Government had not issued an official response to Obi's remarks regarding the reported off-budget spending.
The issue has generated public discussion on fiscal accountability, with analysts noting the importance of transparent financial reporting and effective oversight in maintaining confidence in public institutions.
