Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has spoken publicly for the first time after the Spanish champions decided not to pursue a permanent £26 million move for Marcus Rashford, admitting he will "miss him" while backing the club's decision to move in a different direction during the summer transfer window.

The England international had been strongly linked with a move to the Catalan giants after reports suggested Barcelona were considering triggering an option to sign him permanently following discussions with Manchester United. However, the club ultimately opted against completing the deal. 

Flick Praises Rashford

Speaking after Barcelona's latest pre-season fixture, Flick praised Rashford's qualities both on and off the pitch.

"Marcus is a fantastic player and a wonderful person. Of course, I will miss him."

The German coach said Rashford's pace, versatility and experience would have been valuable additions but stressed that Barcelona must also consider its long-term sporting and financial objectives. 

Barcelona Shift Transfer Priorities

Despite earlier interest, Barcelona have reportedly decided not to proceed with the transfer as sporting directors continue focusing on alternative targets better suited to the club's current financial structure and tactical plans.

Club officials are believed to have prioritised younger players and positions requiring greater reinforcement ahead of the 2026–27 campaign. 

Rashford's Future Remains Uncertain

The decision leaves Rashford's future unresolved as Manchester United continue evaluating options for the forward.

The 28-year-old remains one of England's most recognisable footballers, but speculation surrounding his long-term future has intensified following recent transfer interest from clubs across Europe and the Middle East.

United have yet to confirm whether Rashford will remain part of their plans for the upcoming season.

Barcelona's decision also reflects the club's continued emphasis on financial sustainability.

Although the reported transfer fee was considered relatively affordable by modern football standards, Barcelona continue operating under strict budgetary controls while balancing squad investment with La Liga's financial regulations.
