President Meets Regional Bloc Chief as Four-Year Tenure Nears Completion 
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has received the outgoing President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, marking one of the Gambian diplomat's final official engagements before leaving office.
The closed-door meeting, held at the State House on Thursday, comes just weeks before Touray formally concludes his four-year tenure as head of the executive arm of the regional bloc. Although details of the discussions were not immediately disclosed, the visit has drawn attention given the critical role ECOWAS continues to play in addressing political, security and economic challenges across West Africa.
Touray Accompanied by Foreign Affairs Minister
According to photographs released by the Presidency, Touray was accompanied to the meeting by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye.
The visit was regarded as a courtesy call ahead of the end of Touray's administration at the ECOWAS Commission, where he has served since July 3, 2022, following his unanimous nomination by the Government of The Gambia and endorsement by the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.
Four Years at the Helm of ECOWAS
During his tenure, Touray oversaw the Commission through one of the most challenging periods in the organisation's history.
ECOWAS grappled with multiple military coups in West Africa, constitutional crises, regional security threats linked to terrorism and violent extremism, as well as efforts to strengthen economic integration among member states.
The Commission also continued work on trade facilitation, regional infrastructure, free movement of people and implementation of broader integration initiatives across the sub-region.
Experienced Diplomat
Before assuming leadership of the ECOWAS Commission, Touray served in several high-profile diplomatic positions.
He was The Gambia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations and later served as the country's Minister of Foreign Affairs under former President Yahya Jammeh before joining the Islamic Development Bank, where he continued his international development career.
His appointment to the ECOWAS Commission was widely viewed as recognition of his extensive diplomatic experience and regional expertise.
Tinubu's Continued Regional Role
President Tinubu remains an influential figure within West African diplomacy, having previously served as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government before handing over the rotating leadership to Sierra Leone's President Julius Maada Bio in 2025.
Analysts say the meeting reflects Nigeria's continued commitment to regional cooperation, particularly as ECOWAS navigates ongoing political transitions and security challenges in parts of the sub-region.

While neither the Presidency nor the ECOWAS Commission released details of Thursday's discussions, observers expect consultations between Nigeria and ECOWAS to continue as the regional bloc prepares for a leadership transition.
