Tottenham Hotspur's expensive summer rebuild got off to a nightmare start as Brentford swept them aside 3-0 at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday.

Spurs arrived with renewed optimism after spending heavily in the transfer market, but they struggled to find any rhythm against a confident Brentford side.
Keane Lewis-Potter opened the scoring after 12 minutes before Vitaly Janelt doubled the hosts' advantage before half-time. Michael Kayode then added a third shortly after the restart to complete a memorable victory.
Tottenham dominated possession but created very little, finishing with just 0.47 expected goals compared with Brentford's 3.96. They also failed to register a shot on target in the first half.
The defeat is an early warning for Roberto De Zerbi, whose heavily rebuilt squad looked short of cohesion and confidence. Spurs had spent more than £300 million during the summer in an attempt to move on from two consecutive 17th-place finishes.
Brentford, meanwhile, looked organised, energetic and dangerous throughout, giving new head coach Keith Andrews a perfect start to the campaign.
For Tottenham, the message is clear: big spending alone will not solve their problems. De Zerbi now has to quickly turn a collection of expensive new players into a functioning team.
