The governments of Lagos, Ogun and Oyo states have declared Thursday, August 20, 2026, a work-free day to mark this year’s Isese Day, an annual celebration of Yoruba culture, tradition and indigenous spirituality.

The declarations will allow public servants and residents to participate in traditional prayers, cultural displays, processions, drumming and other activities planned for the celebration.

Celebrating Yoruba Heritage

In Lagos, officials said Isese Day is more than a public holiday, describing it as an opportunity to showcase Yoruba heritage and its global cultural influence. The state expects millions of people to participate in this year’s celebrations.

Ogun said the occasion provides an opportunity for traditional worshippers to honour their ancestors and observe cultural rites, while urging residents to celebrate peacefully and respect the beliefs of others.

In Oyo, Governor Seyi Makinde said the work-free day would enable residents to participate in the celebration and pray for peace, unity and stability in the state and Nigeria.

Isese Day is observed annually on August 20 and has gained greater official recognition across southwestern Nigeria in recent years.

For many Yoruba communities, the celebration represents an opportunity to preserve tradition, pass cultural values to younger generations and promote Nigeria’s indigenous heritage.
