Liverpool fought back twice to earn a dramatic 2-2 draw against Newcastle United at St James’ Park in Andoni Iraola’s first Premier League game in charge.
Newcastle made a flying start, with Anthony Elanga opening the scoring after just five minutes. Liverpool responded after the break when Cody Gakpo equalised in the 55th minute, but Joe Willock restored Newcastle’s lead only two minutes later.
Just when Newcastle looked set for victory, Liverpool were awarded a penalty in the ninth minute of stoppage time after Victor Muñoz was brought down. Dominik Szoboszlai kept his cool and fired home to secure a point for the visitors.
The result gives both teams a point from the opening weekend, although Liverpool will know they must improve after an unconvincing performance.
