Trent Alexander-Arnold has admitted that the backlash following his move from Liverpool to Real Madrid has been painful, while saying he understands why some supporters were angry.

The England defender ended his 20-year association with Liverpool last summer to join Real Madrid, a decision that triggered intense criticism from sections of the fanbase. He was booed on his return to Anfield, while a mural of him was also defaced with the word “rat.”
Alexander-Arnold said online abuse and threats were particularly difficult, but stressed that he does not believe such behaviour represents Liverpool or the city.
He acknowledged that supporters had every right to feel disappointed by his decision, saying the reaction “hurts” because of everything he gave the club over two decades. However, he added that he could understand anger expressed through booing.
Despite the bitter ending, the 27-year-old revealed that he still watches Liverpool matches and continues to support the club, insisting that Anfield and the city will always feel like home.
For Alexander-Arnold, the relationship with Liverpool may have changed, but his affection for the club remains.
