North Korea has criticised South Korea’s response to the United States’ decision to scale back joint military exercises, accusing Seoul of showing “uneasiness” and “impatience” over the move.
Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, described South Korean President Lee Jae Myung’s comments as “double-dealing.” She said Seoul’s reaction showed concern over the changing military posture of its key ally, the United States.
US Scales Back Joint Drills
The comments came after US President Donald Trump ordered a significant reduction in the annual Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises with South Korea.
Trump has argued that the drills are expensive and can complicate efforts to reopen diplomatic engagement with Pyongyang. South Korea, meanwhile, has stressed the importance of maintaining its security alliance with Washington.
North Korea Remains Sceptical
Despite the reduction in the exercises, Pyongyang continues to view US-South Korean military cooperation as a threat.
Kim Yo Jong said North Korea remains convinced that US policy toward Pyongyang is hostile, while also saying she was unaware of any recent direct communication between Kim Jong Un and Trump.
The dispute comes as North Korea continues expanding its military capabilities and strengthening ties with Russia and China, adding further complexity to efforts to restart negotiations.
For South Koreans, the latest exchange raises a bigger question: can Washington reduce military tensions with Pyongyang without weakening the security partnership Seoul depends on?
