Trump Threatens 50% Tariffs on Cars and Trucks Amid Canada Trade Dispute

U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to raise tariffs on all cars, trucks, auto parts and steel to 50%, escalating the ongoing trade dispute with Canada.                                                                                    

                                                    

Trump said the proposed tariffs could take effect on January 1, 2027, putting further pressure on Canada’s closely integrated automotive industry.

The announcement follows the breakdown of trade talks between Washington and Ottawa. Canada has already responded to new U.S. tariffs with plans for dollar-for-dollar retaliatory measures.

The escalating dispute could increase manufacturing costs, disrupt North American auto supply chains and potentially push up vehicle prices for consumers if no agreement is reached.
