The ongoing US-Iran conflict and disruption of the Strait of Hormuz are prompting countries across Europe and Asia to accelerate investments in renewable energy as they seek to reduce their dependence on imported fossil fuels.

The disruption has exposed the risks of relying heavily on oil and gas supplies that depend on vulnerable international shipping routes. As a result, governments and businesses are increasingly turning to solar power, wind energy, electric vehicles and other clean technologies to strengthen energy security.
Renewable energy generation is expected to rise globally in 2026, although some countries are also increasing coal use to meet immediate energy needs. The International Energy Agency forecasts an 8.5% increase in renewable output this year.
China has continued expanding solar power, while countries such as the Philippines and Australia are seeing increased rooftop solar installations. Europe is also accelerating efforts to reduce its exposure to volatile fossil-fuel markets.
