Pakistan says the United States and Iran are close to reaching “some sort of arrangement”, raising fresh hopes of a breakthrough in the standoff over the Strait of Hormuz.

Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said recent signals suggested the two sides were moving closer to an agreement. His comments came as Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi travelled to Tehran as part of efforts to revive negotiations.

The possible breakthrough comes despite continued attacks on shipping routes. A recent attack on a commercial vessel in the Red Sea reportedly killed crew members, highlighting the risks facing ships operating in the region.

Why It Matters

A deal could help ease the pressure on global oil supplies and shipping, potentially reducing fears of higher fuel and transportation costs.

However, uncertainty remains. Iran and the US still have major differences over sanctions, security and the conditions for reopening Hormuz.

For millions of people watching fuel and food prices, the biggest hope is that diplomacy succeeds before the regional crisis causes even greater economic disruption.
