Robots Are Now Asking for Tips — But Where Does the Money Go?

Robots are increasingly moving into restaurants, cafés and delivery services — and now some are asking customers for tips.

As robotic workers become more common, customers are being presented with the same tipping screens they would normally see when dealing with human staff. That has sparked a simple question: if the robot did the work, who receives the money?

Who Gets the Tip?

The answer depends on how the business operates its tipping system. In many cases, the robot itself does not receive or control the money. Instead, tips may be collected by the company and distributed to human employees or used according to the organisation's tipping policy.

That is why transparency matters. Research into “robo-tipping” found that customers are more willing to tip when they understand where the money is going and believe the arrangement is fair.

Why Are Customers Being Asked?

Businesses may argue that tipping still supports the people behind the service — including staff who prepare orders, maintain robots or assist customers.

But the practice is also part of a wider expansion of “tip culture”, where digital screens increasingly ask customers to leave gratuities even when human interaction is limited.

That can leave customers wondering whether they are rewarding good service or simply being encouraged to pay more.

The Bigger Question

The rise of robot tipping highlights a bigger issue about the future of work.

If machines increasingly deliver food, prepare drinks and perform other customer-facing tasks, should customers still be expected to tip — and should businesses clearly explain what happens to the money?

For now, the robot may be the one holding out its virtual hand, but the real beneficiary is still the company and its workers behind the machine.
