Canada has suspended trade negotiations with the United States after the latest talks failed to produce an agreement, with Prime Minister Mark Carney warning that Ottawa will respond to new US tariffs “dollar for dollar.”
The United States has imposed 50% tariffs on about $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, escalating tensions between the two close trading partners. Canada says it will impose equivalent tariffs on American products.
Carney said Canada had made progress during the negotiations but rejected what he described as unacceptable last-minute changes to Washington’s proposed terms.
The breakdown raises fresh concerns about a wider US-Canada trade war, with businesses on both sides facing increased uncertainty.
For now, Ottawa says it remains ready to defend Canadian workers and businesses while looking for ways to strengthen trade with other international partners.
The collapse of the talks marks a major setback for US-Canada economic relations and could put further pressure on businesses and consumers in both countries.
